VISION MALAMA
NURSING EDUCATION CAPACITY SUMMIT

WHAT:          

National Education Capacity Summit sponsored by Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Center to Champion Nursing, AARP, Department of Labor, Department of Human Services

 

HAWAI’I TEAM:       

One of 18 teams selected from 49 applicants nationwide to participate in the June, 2008 Summit.  Diverse team composed of legislators, educators, employers, nursing staff, nurse leaders, AARP and workforce experts

 

SUMMIT:      

Major focus on four areas:  strategic partnerships and resource alignment; role of policy and regulation; increasing faculty capacity and diversity; education redesign. 

 

POST SUMMIT RETREAT

Focusing on the four areas, teams developed an initial strategic plan to increase education capacity for nursing in Hawai’i:

 

STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS  

Goal 1:  Develop a statewide program(s) to encourage professional growth/enrichment for mid-career RNs

  • Year One:  Complete inventory of needs by facility including programs, types of education, faculty options and funding

  • Year Two:  Establish collaboration among organizations to share resources and training

  • Year Three:  Establish two opportunities for statewide collaboration

           

Goal 2:  Develop a statewide tracking and matching program for nursing students at the beginning of the clinical rotation

  • Year One:  Complete inventory of employers of nurses by use of statewide resources

  • Year Two:  Database established of RN students who want to work in Hawai’i and jobs available  

  • Year Three:  Counseling and first matching program complete

           

Goal 3:  Establish a steering committee to determine the direction and strategic plan that coordinates the efforts of all teams

 

POLICY AND REGULATION
Goal 1:  Identify federal and state regulations which support or inhibit utilizing the nursing workforce to its fullest potential

Goal 2:  Improve services and decrease healthcare costs by improved and enhanced performance

Goal 3:  Define key issues for legislation

 

INCREASE FACULTY CAPACITY AND DIVERSITY
Goal 1:  Award fellowships and scholarships generated by partners and sponsoring agencies for faculty development

  • Year One:  Proposals have been submitted for scholarship funding including tuition and living expenses to partners and agencies

  • Year Two:  Award first group of grantees

  • Year Three:  Continue sustainable funding for ongoing annual awards

 

Goal 2:  Augment nursing school faculty by use of graduate students including those from other majors; recruiting expert practitioners to participate in clinical teaching; providing incentives to engage in teaching by offering tuition waivers in exchange for services

  • Year One: Mechanism to establish programs for key partners completed

  • Year Two: Pilot first phase of faculty augmentation

  • Year Three: Evaluate program and recommend expansion

 

EDUCATION REDESIGN
Goal 1:  Increase technology based learning (TBL) to join multi-state consortia to leverage resources

  • Year One:  Develop one other partnership with MOUs to work toward sharing resources and developing compatible platforms

  • Year Two:  Implement and/or seek additional funds

  • Year Three:  Evaluation completed; seek funds and develop sustainability plan

 

Goal 2:  Implement statewide UH Consortium curriculum based upon identified competency and redesign of clinical component

  • Year One:  Pre-nursing students are enrolled on UH Campuses;           demonstration projects for clinical education are identified and supported

  • Year Two:  First nursing course in statewide consortium will be taught;             new clinical approaches in demo projects are in place and ongoing

  • Year Three:  Associate Degree (ADN) students complete courses with           seamless educational advancement to Baccalaureate Degree (BSN)    programs

 

NEXT STEPS:  Continue to utilize technical support and consultation from Center to Champion Nursing and national partners.  Team Leaders will convene teams for 90 day outcomes.
